And here is the view from Peel Crag looking down on the Peel Gap Tower – apparently this tower was added after the wall was completed – it was built abutting the wall rather than recessed into it like other towers.

Since this very brief trip, I found out that there was miletower a short walk along Peel Crag and just beyond that Sycamore Gap (which I had seen from the main road) – I’ll be sure to visit both on my next trip when I would hope to have more time to explore.

Here is another closer shot of the wall near Peel Gap Tower – a bit surprised to see that the mortar looks like lime mortar (similar to that used on our late Victorian Cotswold House) – while the Romans may have used this, I understand that some of the wall was rebuilt by Victorian ‘archaeologists’ which might explain the mortar and the quality of this section of wall.
