Hadrian’s Wall

This is a very small part of Hadrian’s Wall – taken above Peel Crags from south of the wall, looking east – The water of Crag Lough is just visible in the middle distance.

The wall was 73 miles long, stretching from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend on the River Tyne – There were milecastles (not exactly one mile apart, depending on terrain) and two turrets in between and forts every five miles – construction started in 122AD and was completed by 128AD.

While the wall here is in quite a good condition, in Roman times it would have been much taller, some 5-6m high and 3m wide – close by there are other small sections of wall that were much wider – much of the stone from the wall has been removed for other buildings since the Romans departed Britain.

Update:  I have been informed by my family that I am showing my age by using the term ‘AD’ instead of ‘CE’ (Common Era) – personally I find it a bit ridiculous…this is Roman history, therefore AD is appropriate – suspect it is just a ploy to get text books reissued…
