London Pleasure Gardens

Another discovery during my early morning walk after viewing the Thames barrier, was this – I was waiting to cross the road (very slow pedestrian lights and lots of traffic!), noticed the gates and went to take a look – as you can see from the photograph I took, it is somewhat derelict – searching Google, I see that it is more recent than I first thought – it was finished in June 2012, but closed again about five weeks later – It was aimed to be an attraction for visitors to the 2012 London Olympics, but involved quite a long walk from the London Excel DLR station (nearer to the Olympic Park) that many didn’t bother – a disastrous concert didn’t help either – apparently, it cost Newham Borough Council some £4M…details here.

In the background, you can see the derelict Millenium Mills building – previously a flour mill, built around 1904 – was bombed during the war and restored – flour production at the building was finally stopped in 1981 when the Royal Docks closed when many businesses relocated to Tilbury with the increase in use of containers on ships.

Post processing involved the usual settings to pull back the highlights and boost the shadows (though not too much) – a graduated filter to improve the sky a little, another from the bottom of the photo to darken the steps a little – some localised adjustments to reduce distraction from some of the foliage – crop to 16:9 aspect and sharpen.
