Menorcan Sunrise

Menorcan Sunrise

This picture was taken during the family holiday on Menorca this year – this was an early start to get up for the sunrise and a short drive to get from the villa we were staying in up to the Monte Del Toro convent – the highest point on the island. There is a huge radio mast on one side of the hill, clearly a telecoms hub for signals from Majorca and the mainland.  There is a car park on the top for visitors to the church, gift shop and cafe – at 06:00 (or so) it was deserted  – except for one other guy, also waiting for the sunrise.

I took a few shots as the sun rose above the horizon, and while it was nice, it lacked something special (the sky was cloudless) – as the light levels rose, I wandered around a bit and noticed the slight mist in the valleys and took this shot across the hills below me – I had to zoom in a bit to eliminate some distractions – I am very pleased with the result.

Post processing in Lightroom 4 originally, and some extra tweaks in LR5 – a graduated filter for the sky, lifting the shadows, reducing the highlights and extra adjustments to bring out the wall in the foreground.
